What sets classical Pilates apart from other fitness formats?
Classical Pilates distinguishes itself through its adherence to six fundamental principles: control, centering, concentration, precision, breathing, and flow. These principles interplay in every exercise throughout the entire training, enhancing not only physical strength but also mental competence.
A classical Pilates session seamlessly combines various elements you'd expect from a purpose-driven workout, including strength, stretching, mobilization, concentration, and endurance. All of this is woven into a single comprehensive workout. It doesn't just sound great, it truly is exceptional!
What sets equipment-based Pilates apart from mat-based training?
While mat-based Pilates is a valuable component, it constitutes only about 5% of the classical Pilates method, consisting of approximately 40 mat exercises. In mat exercises, the primary resistance is gravity, pulling you toward the floor, and it doesn't provide immediate feedback on the effectiveness of your workout.
The genius of the Pilates system becomes evident through equipment training. Equipment utilizes the resistance of tension springs, revealing physical imbalances and weaknesses. This isn't achieved through isolated muscle exercises such as bicep curls but by connecting muscle series that control the functions of the entire body. Pilates, in essence, serves as exceptional functional training.
It's possible that one side of your body is stronger while the other side offers greater mobility. Classical Pilates training excels in addressing and correcting such imbalances.
Fun Fact: Joseph Pilates assigned mat exercises primarily as homework to help his students better grasp and feel the training benefits from equipment work, thus enhancing their overall progress.
